People in Helston were given an early morning wake-up call today as Helston Town Band marched through the street for the first of its May Day parades.

This morning (Monday, May 1) Helston Town Band were joined by members of the public outside the Guildhall for the first of two May Day parades today.

The parades, which are affectionately known as the ‘unofficial’ Flora Day practice, take place every year.

Helston Town Band and members of the public gathered outside the Guildhall this morning at 7am where they set off through Meneage Street and towards The Parade at the bottom of Trengrouse Way.

They then turned around to come back down through the town, turning right at the traffic lights to head through Wendron Street, down through Penrose Road and onto Church Street.

Falmouth Packet:

The band turned right at the lights down through Coinagehall Street and then onto the bowling green, which they shall parade around before returning to The Guildhall.

This evening the band will gather outside the Guildhall at 7pm for the same route again, albeit slightly longer as it will extend onto St Johns Road this year.

As the band walked through the streets this morning, people took to social media to share their videos and pictures of the procession.

Katie Louise Bragg who lives near Spar heard the music as she left her house to go to work. She said: “I have just listened to the band.

“Hearing the music this morning has put me in the best mood. I can’t wait for the big day!”
