Police say that Flora Day passed in good spirits and without major event, despite the huge amount of people that crowded into Helston.

Many thousands of people gathered in the town for the dances, with the general agreement being that it was the busiest Flora in many years.

Police officers from Penzance, Camborne and Truro, along with the prevention and detection team from Plymouth that supports such events, were drafted in to help those in the Falmouth and Helston sector, with 26 in total working in staggered shifts throughout the day.

Sergeant Paul Kelly, based in Falmouth and Helston, described it as a "really successful" event, telling the Packet: "The day was absolutely fantastic. We didn't deal with any police incidents during the day.

"There were a few incidents during the evening but nothing majorly significant."

He said one man was arrested for possession of class A drugs and a bladed article, another for possession of a class C drug and a third for class A again, along with one drink driver in the early hours of the following morning.

The only other reports were "minor scuffles" and one minor assault on a member of door staff, he said.

Sgt Kelly went on to add: "It was so busy. That's what was so nice about it. It's been a couple of years since they have done it and there were so many people there, but it was all really good-natured and everyone was just enjoying the day."

Police also offered support to St John Ambulance dealing with a few medical incidents during the day, the majority of which were the result of the unexpected heat.

While the charity's volunteers led on the response, Devon and Cornwall Police's tri-service officer assisted one of the patients in Cross Street.

Four people are understood to have collapsed and suffered medical incidents while waiting for the dancers at Lismore, with another person reported to have fainted at the bowling green.
