AS families came together to celebrate Flora Day at the weekend, a Helston family came together to witness a very special moment.

Russell Harvey, 87, played his 74th Flora Day for Helston Town Band. He took part in three dances of the day, the 7am dance, the Children’s Dance and then again in the 5pm Evening Dance.

The Harvey family has enjoyed many Flora Days over the years, but this one was extra special, to see a great-grandfather and his great-granddaughter performing and dancing in the same dance.

Olivia who is in year two at Parc Eglos, danced for the first time with Iwan, and his grandmother Ann Pascoe, who owns Manor Fashions in Meneage Street, also took part playing in the band for the Children's Dance.

Russell said he had “a good day” but was unfortunately suffering with a sore knee, so is resting up at home now.

Russell plays the cornet and has been part of the band for the past 70 years. And he isn't the only family member to play in the band, his son Ian is also a member, and Russell’s brothers Malcolm and John were also part of the band for many years.

In 2014 he was rewarded with certificates and medals from the chairman of the Brass Band Association.
