Green fingered pupils at Mullion County Primary School have been busy in their vegetable gardens ahead of a plant sale this Thursday.

Students from the school created raised vegetable gardens last year, with help from local residents. The aim was to encourage the children to eat more healthily, and thought this may happen if they grow the food themselves.

Now in their second growing season, the young gardeners are keen to learn the many aspects of organic gardening, helped by volunteers from Mullion Horticultural Society and Mullion in Bloom.

Last year the children sold their produce to parents and at local events to raise the money to continue their gardening. Their growing has now been so successful that they plan to sell organically grown vegetable plants at the annual Mullion Plant Sale.

The sale takes place at Mullion WI Hall on Thursday, when doors will open at 7.30pm.

The pupils are helping the environment further by saving their fruit peelings from break time and composting them.

The pupils hope that one day they will be able to afford a greenhouse to advance their skills even further.
