The full regatta programme for the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta has been finalised.

Falmouth is playing host to the start of the event, with a fleet of some 20 Tall Ships arriving by midday on Wednesday September 10 for four days of entertainment and spectacle before leaving on Saturday September 13 in a Parade of Sail preceding the race start.

The large square rigged vessels will be berthed in Falmouth Docks, which will be open for the public to visit from Wednesday September 10 through to Friday September 12. The opening times will be 11am until 7.30pm on Wednesday and 10am until 7.30 pm on Thursday and Friday.

In the event area in Falmouth Docks there will be a Skinner's Bar and food stalls. The smaller ships taking part in the Regatta may be seen at Port Pendennis Marina with viewing points from theNational Maritime Museum walkway or Events Square.

In addition to the visiting Tall Ships, during the four days there will be an extensive programme of activities throughout the town including markets, music, entertainment, exhibitions and a firework spectacular.

Samantha Groom, Tourism Officer for Carrick District Council said: "It is important that Falmouth has facilities in place to maximise the economic impact of the Tall Ship's visit. Various working groups and partnerships have been formed and as a result there will be an extensive programme of activities over the four days".

Church Street Car Park will be closed as a car park and will play host to a local food, craft and gifts marquee, a Skinner's bar area, entertainment and street performers.

Here visitors will be able to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a magnificent view of the Tall Ships in the Docks. Known as the Regatta Shopping Village, the site will be open to the public from 11.00 am until 10.30 pm. Custom House Quay will also be car free allowing visitors to enjoy the Quays facilities to the full.

Events Square will become the Regatta Entertainment Centre, with a programme of children's activities, entertainment and live music. The Princess Pavilion will be hosting the crew party and also be providing day time activities and live music evenings during the event. The firework display will take place on Friday September 12 at 9.30 pm.

From Wednesday September 10 to Saturday September 13 the following roads will be closed from 11.00 am until 11.00 pm.

The Moor NE of the roundabout.

Market Street.

Church Street.

Arwennack Street (up to Swanpool Street).

Quay Hill & Quay Street.

The official partners for the event in Falmouth are Carrick District Council as the lead accountable body, Falmouth Tall Ships Association, Cornwall County Council, South West Regional Development Agency, A&P Falmouth, Falmouth Harbour Commissioners, Cornwall Marine Network, Port Pendennis Marina, National Maritime Museum Cornwall, and Falmouth Town Council. yet again everything centre's on events square. we've just had the moor repaved outside the post office, so why isn't anything being arranged to take place there? why is it always events square all the time? Not at all fair on the businesses at the moor end of town, very unfair i think

I have heard from a number of sources that the Tall Ships Event is being used as a vehicle to promote the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Truro and Falmouth, Sarah Newton (Nee Hicks). The leading Management Co-ordinator of the Tall Ships is John Hicks, her Father, a past Chairman and President of Falmouth and Camborne Conservatives. Other seniot Tories also hold influential positions in the management Committee. If this is the case I am surprised that the public bodies sponsoring the programme have given this toleration. I am sure that the corporate bodies offering sponsorship will also not be happy. It is interesting that the Liberal Democrat controlled Cornwall County Council have not cottoned on to the support being given to the conservative party.
Recently a Fund Raising evening showing a picture of Tall Ships supporters in the Packet, was only the local falmouth conservative party activists.
I hope his worship the Mayor of Falmouth Cllr Michael Varney Independent and first citizen of Falmouth and his fellow concillors will have precedence over any non elected political Candidate, and that our elected Member of Parliament the Honourable Julia Goldsworthy will also be invited to one of the top seats.
I will not be happy if this event is hi-jacked by the conservative party.

Who cares, the libdems in CCC have been a load of winkers who have ignored the demands of the cornish people and fostered the incinerator, unitary authority upon us and ignored there election pledges, cornish assembly, etc, etc. Whilst the libdem parliamentary party and HQ stand idly by. I don't care who wins the next local and general elections in cornwall tory, MK, BNP, UKIP, NuLab, I think most aware cornish people are now becoming anybody but LibDem.

So come on henrilloyd and fealmouth regatta and promote the tories that can't be worse than the shower of ****s from the libdems.

The District Council should be applauded for their support of this event. With the Tallship Soren Larsen we have sailed to tallships event all over the world but have fond memories of Falmouth. Not only for past Race events but during the Soren Larsen's days filming the BBC's 'The Onedin Line' in the 80's.
Sadly the ship will not be there for this event - she will be voyaging through Vanuatu in Sept -

But we say Packet readers - get involved.. Sail on one of the ships yourself, the more traditional the better!
