Smiles at Porthleven church anniversary

There were smiling faces all round yesterday following a day of festivities to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Porthleven Methodist Church.
Even the sun smiled on the church, as a day of celebrations were held to mark the landmark occasion.
The day began with morning worship, which was led by the children of the Sunday School, supported by the Porthleven Training Band, who are regular guests at the chapel.
The building was decorated with balloons and banners, while special flower arrangements illustrated the theme of Pentecost.
The service itself took the form of a "birthday party," with a fast-moving compilation of music, drama and demonstration, all designed to illustrate the Pentecost message.
Chloe Billing opened the service with a fanfare and Caitlin Strike led special anniversary prayers that she had written herself.
Members of the congregation were then invited to participate in "passing the parcel" - each layer containing a promise from Jesus, which the children then enacted. Items included a courtroom scene, where the apostle Peter was on trial for his faith, and a "parade of nations" to illustrate the universal importance of the Holy Spirit. Taking part were Caitlin, Justin and Daniel, Chloe and Holly, Neythan, Bobby, Hannah, Victoria, Katie, Alasdair and Toby.
At the conclusion of the service the children's prizes were presented by church member Tony Nicholas and members of the congregation enjoyed a slice of the birthday cake, presented for the occasion by Adrian Chanter.
In the evening another service was held, led by preacher Brenda Richards who is also one of the Sunday School leaders. Some of the older children took part in the service again.
A key feature was the singing from the Men's Choir, originally formed to sing at the annual Harvest of the Sea services, but proving so popular that they are now requested to sing on other occasions.
Lessons were read by Jane Shainberg and Andree Mount. The theme of the service was the necessity for the love of Jesus in today's world. Tea and cake were again served at the conclusion of the service.
David Philp was the organist at both services and David Pountain conducted the choir.
The services were the start of a season of special events to celebrate the anniversary of the building and were certainly well-received by members of the congregation, who were overheard to describe the day as "exhausting but exhilarating," "a great day" and "a wonderful occasion."
On a separate note there will be a special coffee morning at the chapel this Saturday with cake and plant stalls at the chapel from 10am, when everyone is welcome to attend.
As this week is Christian Aid week, there is a Christian Aid Quiz Night at the chapel on Thursday evening. Teams of four are invited, but individuals are welcome to just arrive and join in. There will be light refreshments and the entrance fee is £2 for Christian Aid.
