Helston shop starts cancer services petition
A campaign to keep vital cancer services in Cornwall is being supported by a Helston charity shop.
Cancer Funding for Cornwall in Coinagehall Street is carrying a petition aimed at stopping upper gastro-intestinal, head and neck and complex gynaecological cancer surgery being transferred to Exeter or Plymouth.
Margaret Fitter, who runs the charity, said more than 800 people had already signed up.
"People feel very strongly about this," she said. "Being treated for cancer is stressful enough, without having to travel hundreds of miles for that treatment."
The petition also calls on Prime Minister Gordon Brown to allow Cornwall to have its own "centre of excellence" for cancer surgery.
Any shop or business premises on The Lizard willing to carry its own petition is asked to contact Mrs Fitter at the Helston shop.

None of us like to think about what would happen to us if we got cancer but please consider that travelling to Devon for treatment would be so traumatic to anybody that is already unwell from treatment or from the illness itself.
The people of Cornwall deserve better treatment than this, we should have our own centre of excellence. To my knowledge Treliske is the only hospital in the county where cancer treatment is available (including private treatment for those who are lucky enough to be able to afford it).
