Tornadoes clinch title after nailbiting win
We are the champions: Culdrose Tornadoes have plenty to cheer about after winning the league
We are the champions: Culdrose Tornadoes have plenty to cheer about after winning the league

Falmouth United Athletic u14s 2

Culdrose Tornadoes u14s 3

This was the nail biter that most had predicted. For Culdrose nothing less than a win would do as they started the day two points behind the leaders Alverton who had already completed their fixtures.

As with their previous three meetings this season both teams started quietly and most of the action was contained in the midfield. Eventually the visitors got their passing game together and a move which involved Ben Wormington and Chris Aldred finished with a pin point pass to winger George Moore who slotted the ball past the Falmouth 'keeper.

Culdrose piled on the pressure toward the end of the first half and a series of superb runs by Tom Cooper resulted in the winger bagging the visitors' second as he blasted his shot past the 'keeper.

It was Culdrose who started the second half with more determination, and after a period of sustained pressure Moore broke free again and found himself with just the 'keeper to beat. He held his nerve as the defenders tapped at his heels and drove the ball past the 'keeper to notch the Tornadoes third and his 14th goal of the season.

Culdrose were cruising to a well earned victory when Falmouth suddenly struck against the run of play. The visitors defence failed to clear a loose ball and Falmouth struck with a rocket shot past keeper Kyle Winnan.

A period of intense pressure saw Falmouth hit the woodwork more than once and a complete misunderstanding in defence resulted in the ball being played straight to a Falmouth attacker who scored.

The league title now hung in the balance, but eventually the Tornadoes got their act together and were able to keep possession for the last few minutes.

When the final whistle blew both teams had smiles on their faces - Culdrose because they had now won the league, and United because they they had made a real game of it.

Culdrose coaches Cy Prynn and Simon Wormington had no hesitation in naming Moore as man of the match, whilst Falmouth named Jamie Dury as their best player.

Culdrose had finished of the season in tremendous style, winning the last four games and scoring no less than 20 goals whilst conceding only two. The overall stats make for superb reading with the team having won 14 of their 18 matches with only two defeats. They also managed to score an impressive 105 goals and conceded only 25.

The coaches and all the team would like to thank all their supporters and sponsors Serco and Helston Rotary Club and look forward to their support in the 2008/09 season.
